Choosing the right conversion

These tools compare mass values on food labels, luggage limits, shipping forms and industrial records. The international avoirdupois pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg; the ordinary ounce is one sixteenth of that pound. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, while the US short ton is 2,000 lb.

Mass and weight are often spoken of interchangeably in everyday use, but the calculator converts mass units, not force. Do not confuse an ounce of mass with a US fluid ounce of volume or a troy ounce used for precious metals. For a shipping limit, check whether the rule rounds up each package or only the combined total.

Common questions

Is an ounce always a unit of mass?

The ordinary ounce in this category is an avoirdupois unit of mass, one sixteenth of a pound. A fluid ounce measures volume, and a troy ounce belongs to another mass system. Read the unit and context on the label before converting, especially for recipes, medicines or precious metals.

Can I use a mass conversion for shipping weight?

You can translate a stated mass between kilograms and pounds, but the carrier may apply a separate rule for dimensional weight, rounding or per-package limits. Convert the measured mass first, then check the carrier’s rule. The converter cannot infer package dimensions or decide which billed weight applies.
