Area

Compare floor space and land area in square feet, square metres, acres and hectares.

Choose a conversion below. Every tool includes an instant result, an example and a short explanation.

Choosing the right conversion

Area factors come from the square of a length factor. Since one foot is exactly 0.3048 m, one square foot is 0.09290304 m², not 0.3048 m². A hectare is exactly 10,000 m²; the international acre is 43,560 square feet.

Floor area, land area and usable interior area are different measurements even when expressed in the same unit. When comparing homes or fields, confirm which boundary the source uses. Convert the measured number first, then round to match the source precision; multiplication by a linear conversion factor would produce a serious error.

Common questions

Why can’t I apply a length factor to an area?

Area covers two dimensions, so its conversion factor is the square of the corresponding length factor. One foot is 0.3048 metre, but one square foot is 0.09290304 square metre. Enter the measured area directly in an area tool; multiplying it by a linear foot-to-metre factor gives the wrong result.

Are property area figures directly comparable?

Only if they describe the same boundary and measurement method. Land area, built floor area and usable interior floor area can differ substantially even after all are expressed in square metres. Check the source definition first, convert the number second, and preserve the original precision when reporting the comparison.
