Choosing the right conversion
Volume conversions here use the US liquid gallon and US fluid ounce. One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L and contains 128 US fluid ounces. An imperial gallon is larger, so a recipe or fuel figure labelled only “gallon” needs its country or system checked.
A fluid ounce measures volume, while an ordinary ounce measures mass. They cannot be substituted without knowing a material’s density. In cooking, a measuring cup may also have a different size by country. For precise work, identify the actual container standard and avoid rounding a small ingredient before all amounts are combined.
The gallon tools in this category use the US liquid gallon, which equals 3.785411784 litres. The imperial gallon is larger. If a label or recipe says only “gallon”, establish its country or standard before converting; a correct calculation with the wrong gallon type still gives a misleading answer.
Can I convert fluid ounces into ounces of mass?
Not from the unit names alone. A US fluid ounce describes volume, while an ordinary ounce describes mass. To relate them you also need the density of the particular liquid at relevant conditions. These volume tools convert only between volume units; they do not assume that every liquid has water’s density.
